How are cultures taught in society?

Discuss in detail why you think this statement is true or not..."Families are the main teachers of culture in any society. Each generation passes along what it has learned to the next as the culture carries on."

  1. From my opinion I think that the statement above is not true, my reason for saying that is because to media is a BIG influence on cultures taught in society. Most children now learn and follow by what they hear and see in the media before they actually listen to their family, just to feel cool and respected.

  2. My opinion this isn't true and I say this because young people these days listen to too much music and they think the rappers or singers may influence them so they try and do what they may say in their songs. People may such things like Lil Wayne is their role model or somthing but I think you should listen to the people the are closer to you such as you family rather than others.

  3. To elaborate on Alexis' comment, I too think the media plays a big role in the cultural development of todays youth because children spend lots of there day absorbing the many cultures in the media. They desire to fit in with the trendy behaviors of celebrities. However, this way they can learn about more diverse cultures unlike children who are only learning culture from their family.

  4. I also agree with Alexis and Whitney, the children among our society today have access to media and gossip. Their families may have a little input on teaching them about cultures, too. Mainly the negative things about different cultures the media have taught:the things that ther parents tell them,"go in one ear and the out the other". Their parents might teach them positive differences about people, but the child only hears what they want.

  5. Yes i do agree with this saying because, as children grow they learn by what they are taught from family members most of the time. Also things that they learn as a child 9 times out of 10 they are likely to teach their child/children the positive things that they were taught so it carries from generation to generation.

  6. Culture is taught in society by the music they listen to, the shows they watch on TV, and the people they are around. What they see in their daily life influence what they do and how they act. For example, if a child is around negative things or watch negative things they are bound to do or say negative things. Parents or a parent should teach them positve things and about having positive attitudes because it influences them to do the same thing.

  7. I believe music has a bigger influcene on the newer generation. Although many believe the music is negative, there are some positive outcomes. For example "Considered a fool 'cus i dropped outta high school" (the artist is saying: stay in school, because society labels you a fool if you do otherwise). Today's generation is similar to how it was back in the day, just with more technology. Dont get me wrong, families are still huge contributers, but in my opinion - music is better understood by the 21st century generation.

  8. I do feel that both, the media and family has impact on what the children grow to learn about society today. They learn by listening to what their family talks about and what is displayed on television. Most parents try to teach their children positive differences about others and sometimes the media do too, but the media also display negative things too.

  9. The media has a bigger influence on children, in todays society. Most Kids bypass what their family memebers are doing and look up to Rappers. Trying to live like them. Comparig themselves to what they hear within the music.

  10. I don't agree with statement , one because the way your older family members did things sometimes can't be done in todays modern times. Things that they used have become obsolete. So things changed and the ways of doing things does as well. Two because of the major impact of the media, technology, and social networks. We rather depend on the words of goggle than the experience of our elders in our own families.
